EXCHANGE ON KEY ISSUES

The President of the Republic talked on the phone yesterday evening with the new President of the United States, Donald Trump. Here is the content of this conversation: “The fight against terrorism is a priority for France and the United States. The President of the Republic reaffirmed his determination to continue the actions undertaken in Iraq as in Syria.
He recalled that the resolution of the situation in Syria should be sought within a political framework and under the aegis of the United Nations. No other solution would be sustainable or credible. The President of the Republic called for vigilance on the attitude of Iran in its neighborhood. But he stressed that the nuclear agreement should be strictly respected and fully implemented.With regard to Russia, the Head of State reaffirmed his determination to continue and intensify the dialogue on all subjects. He insisted that the sanctions linked to the situation in Ukraine could only be lifted when the situation in the east of the country would be settled with the full implementation of the Minsk agreements.-----------------------------------------------
The President of the Republic expressed his willingness to continue his efforts to strengthen the European Union in all areas, including defense, in the interests of the transatlantic security link. He stressed the indispensable nature of NATO.
The Head of State recalled the attachment of France to the action of the United Nations, which must be supported by all, starting with the permanent members of the Security Council. The United Nations remains a unique and irreplaceable instrument for resolving conflicts and maintaining peace.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The President of the Republic recalled the importance for the planet of the implementation of the Paris Agreement on global warming. The head of state warned against the economic and political consequences of a protectionist approach.
