However the effect was that of an electric shock. The American left party, dying after eight years of Obama's presidency, has been revitalized by intense debates within it. Three strategies for returning to power in 2020 have emerged: -Reconquer the middle and popular classes for the social left -Reconcile a hyper polarized public opinion for the extreme center -Overthrow a system that penalizes minorities, for progressives  The party establishment has one priority: finding a candidate who can beat Donald Trump, whoever he is. It is all these dynamics that will decide the political figure and project opposed to that of Donald Trump. Celia Belin followed candidates, activists and democratic sympathizers for several months. She describes this proliferation of ideas for the renewal of the American left, and offers an original reading grid of the challenges of the Democratic primary and the presidential election of 2020. An analysis of current affairs which is also rich lessons for democracies facing populist nationalism. A portrait of the democrats mobilized to change the face of America. Gilles Finchelstein, Director General of the Jean-Jaurès Foundation, will receive Celia Belin, Thursday March 15, 2020, on the occasion of the release of her work, at the Jean-Jaurès Foundation, at 6.30 p.m.
